Car MOT FAQS
Giving out free advice is something we have no problem with, but sometimes you just want a simple answer. So these are our most common asked questions about tyres.
The annual testing of your vehicle to ensure it meets minimum road safety standards. You may view the MOT test if you wish. It will be carried out by a Vehicle Inspectorate approved tester. An assistant is essential for proper conduct of the MOT test. You must not interrupt or distract the tester during the inspection. Due to MOT procedures, items may appear under more than one heading.
If your vehicle is older than 3 years it is required to have a valid MOT certificate which is to be renewed annually. This means if your vehicle is new you won’t need to take it for an MOT test until its third anniversary of its original registration date.
Some vehicles such as ambulances and taxis will require an MOT test after their first anniversary of their registration.
An MOT certificate will be valid for 12 months from the prior date your MOT certificate was issued. If you are unsure of when this is, you can find the expiry date on your current MOT test certificate.
You can take your car for its MOT test for up to 28 days before the expiry date on your prior MOT certificate. If you do so, your MOT will then be valid for 13 months and no days will be wasted.
For example, if your MOT certificate expired on the 10th February and you took your car for its test on the 13th of January you would have a 13 months from that point.

An MOT Test can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hours, however, we can schedule this to have your vehicle picked up after you finish work or in a morning
If your MOT has expired you will not be able to drive on that vehicle on the road lawfully or renew your road tax. There is a penalty for not having a valid MOT certificate of up to £1000, this can increase to £2,500 and 3 points on your license if your car failed a test and is deemed as dangerous whilst on the road.
